11 months!

And late on the post, yet again - sorry!

Maya has been doing really, really well lately.  The exciting news of the past two weeks is that daycare is transitioning her from two naps to one nap, which results in a super mega long nap when she does sleep.  This weekend was the first time husband and I were able to keep her awake until 1pm when she's meant to go down, and although she looked a little tired and grumpy out on our pre-lunch bird walk (yes, it was kind of rainy), she perked up a bit at the end :)

As for new skills, our biggest area of progress this month has been signing and speaking.  Actually, the signing has helped us understand her early attempts at some words that we never would have understood if she wasn't also concurrently making the sign for the word while trying to say it.

Words she can say:
- mama (finally!)
- dada (which she likes to call out lovingly a) while nursing, or b) while being rescued in the middle of the night…neither circumstance ever involving dada, however)
- abba/baba (Abby)
- duck
- uh oh
- dog
- an early version of fish
- an early version of shoe
- an early version of yes (hey, that's better than no!)
- moooooo (as in, "a cow says ….")
- la la la (this is a very strange one - her current fav book is "Moo Baa La La La," and when we get to the la la la part, she can actually say it, preempting our reading of it.  L sounds are pretty much the hardest for a kid to make, and her version is more like bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh, but she definitely makes it by using her tongue against her lips.  A total surprise for us - we'll try to get it on film for you!)

Signs she can make:
- milk (again, finally!!!!  This one makes up for all the "dadas" during middle of the night nursing)
- bath
- shoe
- cheese
- all done
- more (well, sort of indistinguishable from shoe, but used in decidedly different contexts)
- dog (which she very adorably sometimes makes by patting *our* leg instead of her own)
- gorilla
- hat
- an early version of berry
- and one other sign she made just yesterday for the first time, copying me, and now I can't remember what it was

She understands a lot more signs than she can make, so I won't list them here, but it's clear that she's done quite well with signing on the whole!

As for major physical milestones, nothing really new since last month.  She can stand up unaided in the middle of a room, but she immediately sits back down in order to get anywhere.  She's competent at cruising along furniture, but quite frankly doesn't look very graceful or well-balanced on her feet yet.  This was oddly late, but it's only been within the past couple of weeks that I come into her room to find her standing in her crib.  She was perfectly capable of doing it since about 9 months, but she just wasn't feeling it, I guess!

As for her personality, I feel like daycare has helped her blossom even more.  She is a much more engaged and interactive baby since going there, especially with other kids.  We took her to a colleague's party last night, and she was definitely into playing with everybody - kids, adults, everybody.  The change is evident at swimming lessons as well, since she now pays much more attention to the other kids in the class (and the kids in the next class over, who are all much older) than to me or the skills we try to work on.  I suppose it's possibly that the change was just a developmental thing that came with age, or maybe this is simply her innate personality, but my impression from how I watched her response to daycare is that she's gaining new social skills from simply being around other kids so much.  And it's REALLY fun as a parent to watch her "play" with others!!

My computer is running out of batteries and I'm not sure where the power adapter is, so I'll have to end here.  Overall, husband and I marvel every day at how lucky we were to get such a bright, fun, happy little girl :)  Our only complaint is that she doesn't sleep through the night.  We are eagerly looking forward to her first birthday in just a few short weeks - and the end of pumping at work, HALLELUJAH!!  If I don't get a chance to post again before Thanksgiving, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.  We're headed to my in-law's house - I'll try to take a bunch of photos!

Here's baby and me headed out in the crazy ice yesterday morning to swimming lessons - hurray for yak trax!

  1. So cute!

I was about to say, 'yay, no snow!', but ice = not so good either. Those shoes sound great-- I'm useless on ice.

Looking forward to seeing more pics of lovely Maya!
